I use the term old lighthouses as some are now run as sites for tourists to visit. Whilst they may still be operational they are run  in modern fashion using current technology.

Lighthouses fascinate me in the fact so many were isolated from the towns and cities when they were put in place.

The coastline of Australia is 25,760 kilometres there are over 350 lighthouses and navigational aids around the coastline. According to Wikipedia the first lighthouse was Macquarie Lighthouse, it was first lit in 1793 as a tripod mounted wood and coal fired beacon.

Our 2023 tour seen us visit 7 of them in Victoria and New South Wales. Some are off the main roads and other require a short walk to access them.

Check out the Lighthouses of Australia website for a full list of the lighthouses and their locations. They also have a map of lighthouse locations..
